How the Silverleaf VMSpc works to record fault codes

Recent events (fault codes) show what has been found (sent by the engine),

since the program was started. Once the program is turned off it clears the

"Recent Diagnostic Events" window, but the fault code remains in "History".

Whenever the VMSpc reads a code from the engine, it automatically shows it

in the "Recent Diagnostic Events" window immediately. It also

automatically, records it in the "History", as well. (It only records it

once in "History", even if the engine sends it repeatedly.) When you hit

CLEAR, it clears the list, of course.

If the engine sends the same code again, (after clearing the "Recent

Diagnostic Events" box), it will again display it in the "Recent Diagnostic

Events" box and record it again in the history. Exiting and restarting the

program, as I said before, has the same effect. The CLEAR function is a way

to see whether a problem has gone away.

The "History" has to be manually cleared, by you.

If you have a problem that may be intermittent and most are, when the engine

is under stress, i.e. climbing a long hill, excessively high outside

temperature situations, etc., you can elect to log the engine data. This is

a great tool when you go in to diagnose the problem later at a dealer when,

of course, the fault code won't repeat itself.

To log, you click on "Advanced", then "Data Logging". From there you can

highlight any monitored function of the engine, by clicking on that item,

such as "Engine Coolant", Engine Load", "Oil Pressure", "Turbo Boost", etc.

You then set up the interval you want this data recorded. This can be set up

in advance if you want, to save time, if the need arises.

When you want to record this data, you simply hit "Start" in the "Recording"

Box. This will continue to log data until the "Stop" button is hit in the

"recording" box. This will generate a file, on your hard drive, which you

can review later to show your mechanic. The more the highlighted items, the

quicker the interval and the longer you log the data, the bigger the file

will get.

Just knowing the fault code is 10,000% better than telling the mechanic that

the "Light" came on while you were driving.  The data log, can really pin

the problem down.

That's why I love this device and the program.

Hope this helps.
